The White Buck, Burley, New Forest
What was once a large Edwardian country house has become a hugely popular pub and restaurant with 20 stylish, boutique rooms, in the heart of the New Forest. Walkers and cyclists flock to it for sustenance after enjoying the surrounding open expanse of heath and woodland. Dog owners grab a bowl and some treats and settle their four-legged friends in front of one of the roaring log fires or wood-burning stoves. Sunday roasts are legendary, as is live entertainment, with a popular garden Shakespeare production in the summer. Rooms have period proportions: high ceilings, bay windows and glorious forest views. Outside, wooden tables tumble down the garden, which ends with a secret adventure playground for the kids.
Just a few minutes' walk from the pub and you can be in the wilderness of the New Forest getting close to the free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys.
The White Buck is on the edge of Burley, a traditional village in the midst of the New Forest. Beaches at Boscombe and Bournemouth are around 10 miles away.
By car: The pub is 2 hours from London and Bristol, and 2 hours 35 mins from Birmingham. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London Waterloo to New Milton takes 1 hour 45 mins. The pub is a 15-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Dog-owners looking for a base for long country walks will love it here. The vase of fresh flowers and wicker basket of apples on the reception desk are a nice touch.
