This classy, comfortable 20-room retreat for gourmand grown-ups is housed in picturesque former farm buildings in Clearwell village in Gloucestershire's beautiful Forest of Dean. There's a quietly attentive atmosphere, with good service from owners Hari and Colin Fell, who can arrange anything from in-room massages to vineyard visits. The restaurant serves great food and drink, making the most of scrumptious local fare such as wild boar, craft gins and ciders and mouth-tingling cheeses. Local attractions include Clearwell Caves and Puzzlewood ancient forest and activities such as canoeing on the River Wye, cycling and walks galore - dogs can stay - and themed breaks: how about foraging, a wildlife safari, jewellery-making or even stargazing?

Food & Drink

Try the Marmalade Mule cocktail - like a Moscow Mule but with gorgeous local Chase Marmalade Vodka, lime juice, bitters and ginger beer. We loved the afternoon tea for the savoury-toothed - sandwiches, wild sausage roll, cheese and onion foggy, cheese scone and a brownie. Yum!

Restaurant: modern British cuisine, locally sourced ingredients. Dishes include lamb rump, pork tenderloin and torched halibut. Open daily for breakfast, afternoon tea and grazing, and dinner. Sunday lunch served 12-2pm.
