WHAT WE LOVE....
Set in an affluent corner of north east Cheshire, the estate at Mere can trace its history right back to the 11th century, when it merited a mention in the Domesday Book. There's been a golf club here since 1935, and the championship course is still the main attraction, but in recent years it's transformed into more of a country resort. Sir Alex Ferguson unveiled a swish new spa and health club in 2011 and the following year, 81 smartly furnished bedrooms were added to the mix. With a fair smattering of celebrity golfers, it's earned itself a bit of a ritzy reputation but the glitz is combined with a laidback lakeside setting, and the surrounding countryside is full of interesting sights and attractions.

Foodies can have fun exploring the many quality farm shops, ice cream farms and country pubs in the surrounding area.
The Mere is located less than 10 minutes (3 miles) away from the town of Knutsford, with it's various shops, bars and restaurants. Manchester airport is a 15-minute drive away.
By car: 4.5 hours (200 miles) from London by car, or 45 minutes (16 miles) from Manchester. Parking is available on site.
By train: the closest station is Knutsford (10-minute drive from the hotel). Warrington, with its direct connections to London and Manchester is 20 minutes away. trainline.com

The Mere is perfect for keen golfers and spa-goers. Arrival makes quite an impression, driving through the original gatehouse archway and across the golf course and passing a wooden meerkat family en route.
