Ride the tiny trains of the magical Rhine Valley
For up-to-date information on travel and COVID-19, click here.
The Rhine is one of the longest rivers in Europe, and one of the most beautiful, with fairy-tale castles, enchanting forests and lush vineyards lining its banks.
On this wonderful short break, you'll journey through this romantic landscape on two unique trains that look like they're from another time and place. You'll ride the historic narrow-gauge Volcano Express from the banks of the Rhine up to Engeln in the Eifel mountains, through stunning scenery and past villages with houses made of black lava.
You will also visit Cochem in the breathtaking Moselle Valley, and take the Ahr Valley 'push-and-pull' train to Altenahr. The scenery here is equally striking and you'll pass through vineyards that produce the local Burgundy-style red wines. There will be plenty of opportunities to taste it, too, and you'll take a buggy ride through the vines around Mayschoss.
Staying in Remagen, with its picturesque narrow streets and riverside promenade, for three nights on a half-board basis, you'll travel from the UK via ferry and then coach, making this the perfect short European break for those who prefer not to fly.
