Fans of the Crawley family and their staff will instantly recognise the square turrets of Highclere Castle, the real-life setting of Downton Abbey. Now you have the chance to go behind the scenes and explore it during an exclusive two-day short break, where you can follow in the footsteps of the show's stars. The castle is home to Lord and Lady Carnarvon.

"My husband and I have the enormous privilege and pleasure of living in, and taking care of, my husband's family home, Highclere Castle," says Lady Carnarvon. "Thanks to Downton Abbey, our home has become one of the most well-known, iconic houses in the world."

Tour 'the real Downton'

Many of the rooms and views at Highclere Castle will be familiar to viewers. Home to the Carnarvon family since 1679, the current Victorian castle is set in 1,000 acres of land. You'll explore the drawing room and dining room - backdrops to many withering put-downs from Lady Violet Crawley, played by Dame Maggie Smith.

As part of your package, you'll receive a free copy of the recent Downton Abbey film on DVD, as well as a signed copy of At Home At Highclere: Entertaining At The Real Downton Abbey by Lady Carnarvon.

    Highclere Castle,

After breakfast, we head to the world-famous Highclere Castle, residence of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and filming location for the much loved Downton Abbey television series and film. Many of the rooms and vistas will be familiar to viewers and fans - both the Drawing Room and Dining Room forming the backdrop to the dryly withering put-downs delivered by Maggie Smith, as the Dowager Countess to some poor unfortunate relation. The Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars of the castle explores the achievements of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 while outside, the distinctive gardens and spectacular parkland designed by 'Capability' Brown are a delight to explore. The castle also has a gift shop, gin bar and tea room. Afterwards, we re-join the coach for our journey home.
